Opposition Researchers

Overview

Friends of the Earth is working for a more healthy and just world. We understand that the challenges facing our planet call for more than half measures, so we push for the reforms that are needed, not merely the ones that are politically easy. Our mission is to change the perception of the public, media and policy makers –  and effect policy change – with impactful, well-reasoned policy analysis and advocacy campaigns that protect people and the planet. This hard-hitting advocacy has been the key to our successful campaigns over our four-plus decades in operation.  Our programs address a wide range of domestic and international issues as they relate to the environment, including but not limited to: climate and energy, food and agriculture, oceans and water, economic policy and democracy reform.

We are looking for two team-oriented opposition researchers to work with our program team to:

  • monitor anti-environmental policies, rules and proposals emerging from various federal agencies.
  • develop strategic research on the impacts of proposed environmental rollbacks.
  • research policy positions, voting records, and political campaign finance contributions of key policymakers.
  • track potential conflicts of interest and ethics violations among political appointees at a US federal agency.

Responsibilities

Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Producing research and analysis on various environmental topics and political appointees.
  • Creating well-organized research files with data from news clips, public records databases, legislative votes, FOIA requests, financial and legal records, etc.
  • Collaborating closely with other FOE staff members, to develop materials and recommendations for journalists and policymakers.
  • Monitoring policy and regulatory developments at a federal agency level.
  • Monitoring policy debates and discussions in the media, and among Members of Congress and other thought leaders.
  • Helping with fact checking.
  • Updating and managing public websites where research will be featured and archived.
  • Assisting with other tasks as needed, such as developing infographics, authoring activist fact sheets.

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for someone with two years of experience.  If you have had experience preparing opposition research that would be ideal.  Overall we are looking for someone who has:

  • Skills working with a multitude of databases and media monitoring software
  • Extraordinary attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to multi-task work well under deadlines
  • Excellent writing abilities
  • Technical savvy required, such as familiarity with Microsoft Office suite as well as publishing software/content management systems.

But above all, you have a passion for the environment and progressive politics . . . and it shows through.  If this sounds like you, please forward your resume here and let’s get started!
